July Wrap-up and August TBR

wrapupandtbr

Hey guys!! How has your month been?

This one did NOT go according to plan😂 So I got in a bit of a reading slump with one book I wasn’t very excited about and to get out of it I decided to read a manga, which usually works or me. Except I got hooked… I basically only wanted to read manga, I didn’t even get to my ARCs which is awful since I asked for them. Anyway, I did enjoy me some manga boom and hope it continues but with a side of my most wanted summer reads.

Check out what I’ve read this month:

First Line Friday: 28 July 2023

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? This is originally hosted by Wandering Words.

Rules:
> Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
> Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
> Finally… reveal the book!

Hey everyone! Hope you’re all having a great Friday ❤️ So, this is an easy one, but it’s so compelling I can’t wait to start the book.

“When I was a child, I loved old men, and I could tell that they also liked me.”

WWW Wednesday – 25 July of 2023

Welcome to my first ever WWW Wednesday. A weekly meme hosted by Sam over on Taking on a World of Words.

The idea is pretty simple, every week you dedicate a post to the three W’s:

What are you currently reading?

What have you just finished reading?

What are you going to read next?

Currently Reading

I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson is STILL my current read? Actually I’m thinking of DNFing this one.

It started quite ok, but it has become boring. I don’t like the female MC, and I don’t like to see the past and present restricted each to one different point of view.

Present – girl / past – boy

I like the male MC but I don’t know, can he be a bit too young for me? Often I don’t have much problem with that, if it is done for everyone to enjoy, aka Nevermoor. But this one, I don’t think it’s good.

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Most Recent Books I Did Not Finish

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

The rules:

  • Each Tuesday, Jana assigns a new topic. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want.
  • Everyone is welcome to join but please link back to The Artsy Reader Girl in your own Top Ten Tuesday post.
  • Add your name to the Linky widget on that day’s post so that everyone can check out other blogger’s lists.
  • Or if you don’t have a blog, just post your answers as a comment.

This week’s topic is: Ten Most Recent Books I Did Not Finish (Feel free to tell us why if you want, but if you do please be nice to the authors and don’t tag them when you mention your post on social media!)

Actually I rarely DNF books, so this is a difficult topic for me, but let’s see, don’t think I have 10 tho. Also, I might consider DNF some, but that doesn’t mean I won’t get to the book at another time that it might work for me better.

The Out Side: Trans & Nonbinary Comics – Review

The Out Side: Trans & Nonbinary Comics by The Kao, David Daneman, Min Christensen
Series: N/A
Published January 1, 2022
Genres: Graphic Novel, Anthology, LGBTQA+
Pages: 111
Format: e-arc by Netgalley
Buy: Amazon

Featuring the work of Sage Coffey, Kyla Aiko, and Coco Ouwerkerk, The Out Side: Trans & Nonbinary Comics includes 29 creators’ tales of self-love and affirmation and detailing their experiences with gender and identity. Originally published as a successful Kickstarter campaign, this expanded edition includes comics by Dana Simpson (bestselling author of Phoebe and Her Unicorn), Aidyn Huynh (Snailords), Wren Chavers, and more.

Equal parts encouraging, comforting, and life-affirming, The Out Side is a love letter to the trans and nonbinary community, designed to inspire anyone who may be struggling with their own identity and to help educate those who seek greater understanding. As artist Julia Kaye writes in the book’s introduction: “I’m so glad this book exists. It’s a loud proclamation of our existence in the face of a culture that has for too long ignored our experiences.”

In this vibrant and affirming comics anthology, 29 trans & nonbinary comic artists share their personal journeys of self-discovery and acceptance.

The stories are incredibly short but I’m gonna try and give my opinion in all of them.

In these reviews I am not in any way rating the author’s lives, just how they were portrayed through a graphic novel short story.

Delicates by Brenna Thummler – Review

Delicates by Brenna Thummler
Series: Sheets #2
First published March 23, 2021
Genres: Middle Grade/YA (coming of age), graphic novel,
Pages: 320
Format: e-arc version
Buy: Amazon

Following the events of the bestselling graphic novel SheetsDelicates brings Brenna Thummler’s beloved characters, artwork, and charm back to life.

Marjorie Glatt’s life hasn’t been the same ever since she discovered a group of ghosts hiding in her family’s laundromat. Wendell, who died young and now must wander Earth as a ghost with nothing more than a sheet for a body, soon became one of Marjorie’s only friends. But when Marjorie finally gets accepted by the popular kids at school, she begins to worry that if anyone learns about her secret ghost friends, she’ll be labeled as a freak who sees dead people. With Marjorie’s insistence on keeping Wendell’s ghost identity a secret from her new friends, Wendell begins to feel even more invisible than he already is.

Eliza Duncan feels invisible too. She’s an avid photographer, and her zealous interest in finding and photographing ghosts gets her labeled as “different” by all the other kids in school. Constantly feeling on the outside, Eliza begins to feel like a ghost herself. Marjorie must soon come to terms with the price she pays to be accepted by the popular kids. Is it worth losing Wendell? Is she partially to blame for the bullying Eliza endures?

Delicates tells a powerful story about what it means to fit in, and those left on the outside. It shows what it’s like to feel invisible, and the importance of feeling seen. Above all, it is a story of asking for help when all seems dark, and bringing help and light to those who need it most.

In the last book, Marj discovered a group of ghosts hiding in her family’s laundromat. After that, one of the ghosts especially – Wendell – turned into a friend.

She is afraid people would find out and call her a freak. She “belongs” now to this popular group and although she doesn’t enjoy it, she wants to fit in, badly.

Eliza is, as the other high school students call her, a freak and they bully her. She is a loner and an avid photographer, she wants nothing but to photograph ghosts. But that doesn’t make her popular at all. She herself feels like a ghost.

Manga I’m Interested In

Hi guys! I wanted to share some manga I’m interested in collecting. I usually check all manga online before buying, including sometimes going overboard and reading a couple of them. I also try (nowadays) not to watch the anime if I’m interested in the manga. Anyone else?😜

But I must confess, I might have watched a bit of something years and years ago, like Fairy Tale, when I was mostly super into anime! And now, that I finally want to pick it up, I liked it so much I still remember everything… It sucks!

So this is a mix of started, completely new, have some, have none… It’s all over the place, but I’m gonna tell you about all of them, including a brief synopsis!

Also this is just a FRACTION of what I’m interested in.

Without further ado, let’s get to it!
