A heartwarming novel of new beginnings, community and finding your tribe when you need them the most…

A precious heirloom passed down from mother to daughter…

Lowena Rowe’s beloved mum always claimed her family seed box was special. Said to contain soil from Tintagel, the mysterious seat of the legendary King Arthur, whomever made a wish upon the box would have ‘a beautiful garden, bountiful crops and love of their fellow man’. Lowena isn’t inclined to believe the myth but can’t part with the box, knowing how much it meant to her mum.

Starting over with a new home and a new job in the Cornish village of St Merryn, Lowena can’t help feeling lost and alone… but she isn’t the only one. Now, as a community of misfits finds solace and friendship in the shade of her growing garden, she realises there might have been truth to the mythical box after all, and she may just be growing the life and love she’s always wanted…

After Lowena’s mother dies, she decides to sells both their houses and buys a beautiful cottage by the sea, where she usually always went to relax.

She starts working in a new tiny library in the area and with that starts also doing tiny projects in it. This brings her to new people, new friends, a new life. But her most prized possession, surprisingly enough for her is her new garden, where she loves to pass her time.

She got from her mother, and later grandmother, a box full of soil and seeds. She decides to plant them, not knowing what could come for it. And slowly the garden starts flourishing and bringing not only happiness but people together.

Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire
Series: Wayward Children #7
Publisher: Tordotcom
Published January 4th 2022
Genres: Fiction, Fantasy
Pages: 160
Format: Hardback
Buy: Book Depository | Amazon

Welcome to the Whitethorn Institute. The first step is always admitting you need help, and you’ve already taken that step by requesting a transfer into our company.

There is another school for children who fall through doors and fall back out again.
It isn’t as friendly as Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children.
And it isn’t as safe.

When Eleanor West decided to open her school, her sanctuary, her Home for Wayward Children, she knew from the beginning that there would be children she couldn’t save; when Cora decides she needs a different direction, a different fate, a different prophecy, Miss West reluctantly agrees to transfer her to the other school, where things are run very differently by Whitethorn, the Headmaster.

She will soon discover that not all doors are welcoming…

This is the first book in which we get to see some other schools like Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children. It’s name is Whitethorn Institute and it’s far from a good place! Cora, who we have met in past books, intends to change schools and go to Whitethorn Institute, but this place is far from what she expects.

I’m so happy this series got up again! I wasn’t a big fan of the last two books but this was fantastic!

A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson – Review

A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson
Series: N/A
Publisher: Nyx Publishing
Published January 31st 2021
Genres: Fiction, Horror, Fantasy
Pages: 248
Format: Paperback
Buy: Book Depository | Amazon

A lyrical and dreamy reimagining of Dracula’s brides, A Dowry of Blood is a story of desire, obsession, and emancipation.

Saved from the brink of death by a mysterious stranger, Constanta is transformed from a medieval peasant into a bride fit for an undying king. But when Dracula draws a cunning aristocrat and a starving artist into his web of passion and deceit, Constanta realizes that her beloved is capable of terrible things. Finding comfort in the arms of her rival consorts, she begins to unravel their husband’s dark secrets.

With the lives of everyone she loves on the line, Constanta will have to choose between her own freedom and her love for her husband. But bonds forged by blood can only be broken by death.

This is the best reimagining of Dracula’s Brides ever. It’s written as an open letter from Constanta, his first bride, explaining the why’s, what’s and how’s of their tale dating centuries. It’s beautiful, haunting and it grips you from the very first page.

In a way you can also see it as a fantasy tale revolving around Stockholm syndrome. The way Constanta describes their relationship with her lord and how it is born and develops, I think it also fits that view.

Constanta is her Lord’s first bride and so she is completely devoted, only seeing the bright side of him. But slowly, with some centuries and with the addition of an aristocrat and an artist to the family, she manages to see through the facade. She starts noticing who he really his and how much everything she knew until now is a lie. And what she has to do to make it all stop.
